The Goodman's electrostatic loudspeaker, designed by Ted, was never brought into full production.

Shortly after the 1956 Hi-Fi Show, ownership of Goodmans passed into new hands. Development of the electrostatic was cancelled - along with several other promising projects.

Goodmans has, in the intervening years, gone through many changes of ownership. Although the name remains, it is today merely a badge for products manufactured overseas.

Goodmans

In 1952 Ted joined Goodmans Industries where the very progressive owner, Edward Newland gave Ted the opportunity to develop his own ideas (with the proviso that if they worked Ted's salary would be doubled - if not he would be sacked).

Ted's work quickly earned him carte-blanch freedom to pursue his own ideas. He now had the freedom of one of the most advanced electro-acoustic laboratories in Europe together with a comprehensive library embracing the works of all the leading authorities in the fields of audio and acoustics. During his twelve years at this company Ted had read all the relevant publications and tested their validity in the laboratory. Here, he studied every known form of loudspeaker loading and developed new ideas and commenced his seminal studies of cone behaviour at high frequencies and established the vital and necessary role that the flexing of the cone played a in the treble performance. This work resulted the Goodmans Axiette, an 8 inch driver which was the first of the single cone, truly full-range drivers. Ted subsequently redesigned the entire range of Goodman's drive units

In June 1956 QUAD announced the launch of a full range electrostatic loudspeaker that they had been developing for five years. Ted was asked if he could develop a prototype in time for the London Hi-Fi show in September, He had three months and unlimited access to every facility the Company could offer ensuring that his every demand for parts and equipment was met.

QUAD announced its debut at the show as The arrival of the World's First Full Range Electrostatic Loudspeaker, When the show opened, much to the consternation of QUAD, Ted had the Goodman's version in the room next door.

During his years with Goodman's Ted had set up demonstrations and delivered lectures, at most of the major exhibitions both in UK and Europe. He had numerous interviews and articles published internationally in technical and Hi-Fi journals.

In 1962 Ted's, extensive knowledge and experience was brought together in his definitive textbook, Loudspeakers, published by Focal Press. It has never been equalled for it's full mathematical analysis of loudspeaker theory and first principle derivation of all loudspeaker parameters, (now often referred to as Theil Small parameters).

Shortly after this Ted, together with Goodmans export manager, Lesley Watts, left the company to form Jordan-Watt.
